Positive operating result for the first time


Frankfurt Hahn Airport has attained its goal and closed its business year with an operative profit for the first time in 2006. EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) amounted to € 446,502, well into the black and represented an improvement of around € 2.9 million over the previous year (2005: € -2.4 million). Income from sales climbed to € 43.5 million, a total of 6.6 million or 18 percent above 2005 (€ 36.9 million in 2005).
The management of the airport sees its strategy confirmed. "Within a period of only nine years, we here at Hahn have managed to make the enterprise profitable," says Jorg Schumacher, Management Spokesman at Frankfurt Hahn Airport. "This success was only possible because we made operating processes more efficient and single-mindedly minimized costs. In the past four years, from 2002 to 2006, income from sales has tripled. We assume that we will chalk up a positive annual result, that is to say, a surplus, in 2009."
"The highest earnings are, of course, in the area of aviation. They account for € 23.1 million or more than 53 percent of total earnings," reports Stefano Wulf, Managing Director of Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH. "One of the airport's biggest growth factors, though, is the non-aviation sector – that is, rental, leasing of land and parking. Revenues here were € 20.3 million, an increase of nearly 25 percent, accounting for 46.8 percent of total proceeds; in 2005, this figure was still 44.2 percent."
The Transportation Minister of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hendrik Hering, refers to Hahn as an exemplary conversion project in Rhineland-Palatinate. "It has developed superbly from a former NATO military airstrip into an international commercial airport and is now the most solidly managed low-cost airports in Germany," says Minister Hering. "In 2006, more than 3.7 million passengers took advantage of the airport in Rhineland-Palatinate, 20 percent more than the previous year. Cargo turnover was more than 123,000 metric tons, 15 percent higher than 2005."
Further growth is planned for 2007. The airport operating company is expecting around 4.3 million passengers and 133,000 metric tons of cargo. The biggest provider of scheduled passenger flights is the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair, which has already announced plans to station more aircraft and add new destinations in the coming year. As far as cargo traffic is concerned, the airport operators have high hopes for a further upswing, especially from the runway extension planned to open in the coming spring.
Fraport AG has a 65 percent stake in Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH, and the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse hold 17.5 percent each. Roughly 2900 employees work at the airport for 112 companies, around 340 of them for the airport operator itself.
