Gallozzi Group combines PORT and LAND size terminals

  09.02.2007

The Gallozzi Group located in Salerno, Italy has large plans to combine the uses of Port Container terminal and inland rail terminals to improve the Intermodal mode of transport , environmental issues, reduce idle time of containers in the Port stacking areas and to provide customers a faster and easier to control of containers availability for final delivery to the shops, warehouses or factories.
Gallozzi Holding, who is the owner of Salerno Container Terminal, the last privately owned Italian Container Terminal located in Salerno , just 30 km south of Naples, handled during the past years around 420.000 teus, 5 mobile Gottwald cranes with twin lift spreaders, able to lift up to 100 tons and guaranteed productivity of 23 moves per crane has a enormous reputation in operations, service and EDI services. Multi trailers (mini trains) are used to discharge and load containers direct from the multi trailers, avoiding discharge first on quay side and after by reach stacker to be put on normal trailers, able the terminal to have a perfectly clean terminal with high productivity. The key for higher vessel productivity is based on getting the containers from the yard to the vessel and from the vessel of the yard, using multi trailers able to take 4 or 6 teus in one time and only by one driver, combined with automatic release of trailers in the stacking areas means that the trailers are continuously driving and create the high productivity requested by the Lines.
However the increase of traffic during the past years from 50.000 teus in 1992 to 420.000 teus in a Port area which is like most other Italian Terminals next to the town, means a expansion of the area is very difficult and costly and having had Governments without any vision on the Port industry mend that only due to the help of the Port Authorities in Salerno changes were made on quay side with special Yokohama fenders, increased draft to 12 m in Port area, ISPS and security measures all in place and a application to receive CSI certificate underway, means that new and modern action needs to be taken.
In December Gallozzi Group took shares in Terminal Intermodale Tin at Nola, this intermodal terminal is located 30 km from Naples and Salerno Port and being in the middle a ideal place to take containers directly from both ports to this inland terminal and to use the same block trains and trucks to pick up the export cargo brought first to this inland Terminal to forward to the Port.
This will release the Naples and Salerno Port for import containers ASAP after discharge, whilst clients can bring the export containers at any time without any delay of town and port traffic in both ports and then moves to the requested port just-in-time for loading on the vessels.
The benefits are large as storage of containers at the inland / rail depot is cheaper, no delays on arrival and departure of trucks and railways, cleaning, washing, storage, fumigation and sanitaria inspection is all available at T.I.N.
Terminal Intermodale Nola (TIN) is connected by (daily) block trains to Milan Segrate, Munich, Bari, Naples, Salerno, Taranto and Gioia Tauro, and those services will be increased to daily block trains to all requested destinations by the customers and Lines.
T.I.N. will implement a complete new computer system created by Esoware (Gallozzi owned software house) and Copas, full EDI will be available based on SMDG rules. E terminal, security, yard planning and full container and swap body based software including customs documentation, Invoicing, bookings via internet and releases via Internet will be available to all customers in the very near future.
Tin terminal is located at Nola and is surrounded by C.I.S. which is the biggest European distribution area for import and export companies and over 500 shops are available. At the same area the new shopping Mull Vulcano will be opened at the end of this year with cinemas, hotels, restaurants and hundreds of shops making this area extremely attractive for future growth.
The very large area is over 3.000.000 m2 and the Interport stacking area for containers and Swap bodies is over 225.000 m2, 13 rail tracks available, own locomotives to operate the train from the rail station to the terminal are available, Multi trailer transport system will be introduced soon to take containers from the stacking area to the shops and warehouses in the C.I.S. area, by dropping the boxes at any time at this area means a direct just-in-time system which will allow customers to have a full benefit in the years to come.
The Managing Director is Cav. Agostino Gallozzi and the Executive Director is Frans Jol.
