DP World Nhava Sheva won safety award

  16.03.2007

In keeping with its "Safety First" policy, a safety initiative promoted by DP World Nhava Sheva (NSICT) has won the 2nd prize in the "2006 DP World Global Safety and Environment Awards for Excellence", Exim News Service reported.
According to a DP World Nhava Sheva release, this initiative revolved around designing and developing an inspection platform for working at heights while carrying out maintenance work around the inaccessible areas of rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGCs). DP World Nhava Sheva has 29 RTGCs in the container yard.
Due to the height of the RTGC, the only way to service some of the areas, such as the vertical cable trays running along the legs, was to suspend a stage or work platform from the top, and lower or raise it manually to get the person to the required position. This also meant that usually only one person could work in a particular area at any given time, and there was the ever-present danger of tools or equipment falling.
Alternatively, a cherry picker or mobile crane was required. Cleaning of the RTGC legs and under the girders was never done, as there was no viable access for this.
The inspection platform developed by the engineering team at DP World Nhava Sheva resolved all these problems. Following the success of the inspection platform at the terminal, Noell China adopted the suggestion and fabricated an inspection platform for the RTGCs meant for MICT and QICT. DP World Chennai also followed suit by fabricating the inspection platform locally.
The uniqueness of the "Global Safety and Environment Awards for Excellence" programme is that the winners have to nominate a charity of their choice to donate their prize money to. DP World Nhava Sheva chose to donate its prize-winning cheque of $700 to Swami Bhramanand Pratishthan, an NGO based in Uran, Navi Mumbai, which looks after the welfare of mentally-challenged children.
There are 20 children on the rolls of this organisation and they receive training in personal and professional skills. These children have won prizes at several events, including the Special Olympics Maharashtra State Meet.
On March 13, Capt. Rustom Dastoor, CEO, DP World Nhava Sheva, accompanied by Mr Daraius Dadachanji, General Manager, Engineering Services, visited Swami Bhramanand Pratishthan and presented the cheque to its principal, Ms Shirish Poojary.
The children of the institution presented an enthusiastic dance performance, following which they were given snack boxes.
The DP World Nhava Sheva team is happy to be contributing to a noble cause by supporting a well-deserving institution like Swami Bhramanand Pratishthan, the release underscored.
