Clean electricity from the port area

  29.03.2007

Port of Amsterdam is going to expand its efforts to generate clean energy. New windmills will contribute to decrease the level of CO2 emissions and will provide 40,000 households each year with energy.
Around the turn of the year, five new wind turbines were built in the Amsterdam port area of Westport. They have replaced smaller wind turbines, which were moved to other parts of the port. There are now a total of 34 wind turbines in the port area. The five new ones are expected to generate 33 million kilowatt-hours a year. This method of generating sustainable energy will mean an annual CO2 decrease of 18.8 thousand tons and will meet the electricity needs of 10,000 households. The wind turbine project was set up by Port of Amsterdam in an effort to contribute to the municipality of Amsterdam's goal to generate a total of 45 megawatts of installed capacity out of wind turbines (37 megawatts has been achieved already). At the end of 2007 another nine large wind turbines will be added (supplying a total of 27 megawatts). The 64 megawatts generated by the wind in the port area on a yearly basis will more than meet the municipal goal and provide 40,000 households with electricity, and the Amsterdam port area will have the largest wind turbine park in the Netherlands.
