With the monsoons set to hit the entire Western coast, authorities at the Konkan Railway (Panaji/Mangalore)said they have completed all safety works for the season to ensure smooth running of trains, according to Karnataka's Daily.
Railway officials said that they had given greater emphasis on safety like covering the mountains with a steel net in order to prevent landslides.
In addition, they are planting about nine lakh Vetiver plants on slopes along the route in order to prevent soil erosion.
Another measure undertaken by the Konkan railway has been the improvement of tracks for safer passage of trains and sandbags have been placed on both sides of the tunnels as buffers.
"We have already issued a special timetable for monsoon and that will be in place from June 10," Vaishali Patgar, spokesperson for Konkan Railway told.
"We have provided the train drivers, station masters and other field officials with 658 mobile phones and walkie-talkie sets. This wireless communication will keep everybody in contact with each other and is useful in times of emergency," Patgar said.
Officials have been appointed to patrol the tracks and more than 700 men will patrol the railway line during monsoons.
