As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, from January to June 2007, the German railway companies together transported 180.1 million tonnes of goods. This was 10.4 million tonnes of goods more (+6.1%) than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Quantities of goods transported by combined traffic (containers, swap-bodies) – as part of the volumes mentioned above – amounted to 30.0 million tonnes (+20.5% compared with the first half of 2006). The quantity measured in terms of Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) reached 2.8 million (+19.1%).
The breakdown in terms of the main transport links shows that all segments increased their quantities: Inland traffic (111,2 million tonnes) grew by 4.4%, quantities of goods carried abroad (28.7 million tonnes) increased by 6.6%, goods coming from abroad (29.8 million tonnes) by 7.8% and transit-traffic through Germany (10.5 million tonnes) by 19.6%.
