TAPA EMEA membership reaches 200 milestone

  06.09.2007

The Transported Asset Protection Association’s (TAPA) proactive membership drive has achieved a significant milestone with AstraZeneca, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, becoming the  200th member in TAPA’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region (EMEA).
The decision by AstraZeneca to join TAPA’s campaign against cargo crime also reflects the growing diversity of the Association’s membership.
Bill Smith, Global Security Director, AstraZeneca, said: "AstraZeneca is pleased to join TAPA.  Ensuring the security of our medicines throughout their manufacturing and supply is a fundamental priority for us. Membership of TAPA complements our existing security arrangements and provides a globally acknowledged standard for the protection of goods in transit.  We also value the opportunities that TAPA offers to share information and best practice with other manufacturers, the freight industry and key law enforcement partners in the countries in which we operate."
AstraZeneca is active in over 100 countries with a growing presence in emerging markets. Its corporate head office is in London and it has major R&D sites in Sweden, the UK and the US. In total, the company has 27 manufacturing sites in 19 countries and for 2006 it reported sales of US$26.5 billion.
Since the start of 2007, TAPA EMEA has attracted a host of leading brand names as Full Members, notably Axis Pty, Electronic Arts, Gucci, Nokia, Richemont and Volvo. New Associate Members have also committed to TAPA including airlines, ground handling organizations, express operators, freight forwarding and logistics providers, ferry companies, banks, insurers and law enforcement agencies.
Jurgen Kempf, Membership Lead, said: “TAPA’s increasing profile and a co-ordinated campaign to attract more companies means TAPA EMEA’s membership is at its highest level since we first established a presence in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region in 1999. It is fitting that AstraZeneca should be our 200th member and we are seeking to engage other members of the pharmaceutical sector; as well as the high value of pharmaceutical raw materials and finished products which the industry transports, there is a vital public health dimension to the security of medicines in the supply chain.
“The value of TAPA membership is clearly understood by the companies we approach and I am confident our numbers will have increased still further by the end of the year. The more our membership increases, the stronger and more powerful TAPA’s voice becomes in the international fight against cargo crime.”
