The European parliament is holding a meeting between national governments to try and reach a common strategy on climate change.
It is hoped that the event, held in Brussels on October 1st and 2nd, will foster a broad agreement among member states before the UN climate change
conference in Bali on 3 - 14 December 2007.
"This is an issue that we're all going to have to tackle on an urgent basis in the run up to the Bali conference", said president of the Portugese
parliament Jaime Gama, co-chairing the joint parliamentary meeting with EP president Hans-Gert Pottering
The conference will also consider the targets set at the energy summit in March this year, such as a reduction in EU emissions by 20% by 2020.
"We will be discussing our ambitious goals for the reduction of CO2 emissions and our ambitious targets for the use of renewable energy, to try and work
towards and agreement for 2009 and the post-Kyoto arrangements", said Pottering
Gama stressed however that the event was not to impose specific targets upon member states or to dictate an energy policy.
"Specific measures on policies such as CO2 emissions and renewable energy is something that is done by national parliaments."
"What we are looking at is changes in EU strategy with respect to global warming...this is the start of discussions at parliamentary level," he added.
