DFDS enters extra ship into service between Karlshamn and Klaipeda

  28.11.2007

As the third vessel on the route, TOR NERINGA will increase the frequency to 10 weekly depar-tures and the capacity by nearly 50%.
DFDS has decided to extend the service significantly on the freight and passenger route be-tween Karlshamn in Sweden and Klaipeda in Lithuania. From 1 December 2007 the Ro-Ro ves-sel TOR NERINGA will enter into service as the third ship on the route. This will increase the number of weekly departures from seven to 10 and the capacity by nearly 50%, thus resolving the present as well as the future transport capacity of the corridor.
“We have previously decided to extend the service from six to seven departures per week. This was very well received by our customers, and therefore we have decided to enter a third vessel on the route and thus increase the capacity even further”, says Anders Refsgaard, Deputy Di-rector, DFDS A/S.
TOR NERINGA has a capacity of 1,469 lane meters and cabins for 12 drivers. The vessel will be able to perform three round trips per week, with the specific aim to increase capacity at peak departure times.
The present Ro-Ro vessels serving the route, LISCO PATRIA and KAUNAS, both offer capac-ity for 250 passengers and extensive passenger facilities besides the capacities for cargo and cars.
The route services passenger and cargo customers between Scandinavia and the markets in Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine and Byelorussia. “We have been servicing the route now since 2001, and we have seen a promising development both in cargo volumes and passenger volumes,” says Anders Refsgaard. “With the new increase in capacity and frequency, we hope to further stimulate trade and volumes between the regions on both sides of the Baltic Sea.”
