Unitised cargo traffic growing at dizzying speed
The development of unitised cargo traffic at the Port of Helsinki has been rapid. With an upswing in the Finnish economy this year, the conditions for growth have been favourable. Unitised cargo traffic at the Port of Helsinki reached 12.0 tonnes, representing an increase of 1.7 million tonnes, or 17%, over the previous year. The increase has taken place mainly in services between Helsinki and Rostock, Helsinki and Travemünde, and Helsinki and Tallinn. Traffic flows were evenly distributed between imports and exports.
Roro traffic continues to play an important role in Helsinki. Trailer lorries and lorries numbered 550,000, which represents an increase of 35% over the previous year. The Port of Helsinki's market share of rubber-tyred traffic was over 55%.
Container traffic increased by 5% and the container volumes reached 440,000 TEU. The Port of Helsinki's market share of container traffic was 29%.
Passenger traffic did not achieve the expected growth figures. In the Tallinn and Stockholm services, the number of passengers decreased by 2 to 4% from last year. However, a brisk increase in passenger numbers for services between Helsinki and Rostock and Helsinki and Travemünde meant that the total passenger volumes reached last year's level, that is, 8.5 million passengers.
