DB Schenker runs 15,000th train to Hungary for Audi
On April 17, 2008 DB Schenker will transport the 15,000th block train for its customer Audi between its plant in Ingolstadt and its Hungarian production site in Györ. Right from the start in the spring of 1997, three train-pairs have traveled the 650-kilometer long route at 8-hour intervals every day.
While just-in-time supplies for engine and vehicle production and car bodies are transported to the plant in Györ, complete automobiles (Audi TT, Audi A3 Cabrio) and engines for all of the group’s brands are sent in the opposite direction to the Ingolstadt hub; numerous Audi and VW sites are supplied through Ingolstadt. “We have put together a service offer which is closely tailored to the requirements of our customer Audi and provides an optimum link between Ingolstadt and the Hungarian production site in Györ. Creating rail-based solutions across Europe is one of our core competences,” says
Dr. Klaus Kremper, Chairman of the Board of Management Railion Deutschland AG.
The trains are powered by continuous traction and require 10 to 14 hours for this route. They weigh as much as 1,400 tonnes, reducing the number of truckloads on the road by 80,000 each year. In addition to Railion, our partner railroads Rail Cargo Austria AG, the Hungarian state railways as well as Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurther Eisenbahn AG are also involved in the transports.
The logistics concept that DB Schenker has designed for Audi also includes cross-border incident management including all railroads involved along with marshaling services at Audi sites: Railion Deutschland AG at Ingolstadt and Railion subsidiary Logistic Center Hungaria (LCH) in Györ.
“Audi Hungaria is acting in an environmentally conscious way and sets great store by transporting a large share of the raw materials necessary for production as well as the products manufactured at the plant in Györ by rail. Thanks to our excellent cooperation with Deutsche Bahn over the years, the goods can be delivered precisely and on time,” according to László Juhász, Head of Logistics at Audi Hungaria Motor Kft.
