Port handles maiden vessel
The new port of Gangavaram received its very first ship—m.v. Ikan Sembak—that brought 53,969 tonnes of non-coking coal from Indonesia
on August 4, according to Exim News Service.
The ship was carrying cargo for Maharashtra Power Generation Company (MahaGenco), near Nagpur. The cargo was brought by its New Delhi-based agent, Knowledge Infrastructure Systems Pvt. Ltd.
The new Gangavaram port has mechanised handling facilities and, therefore, the discharge rate will be much higher, the ship’s agent undersored.
As this could bring down costs considerably, they assured the port authorities that they would continue to favour Gangavaram for their import needs.
Gangavaram port, which is just 20 km south of Visakhapatnam Port, has five deep-water berths, including facilities for mechanised handling of coal and iron ore.
The port offers 21-metre draught along the berth, which allows the largest bulk cargo vessels in the world to dock there.
However, the port is yet to be formally inaugurated.
