AMI Australia launches spot rate desk

  13.08.2008

The Australian division of AMI is launching a Spot Rate Desk to provide faster and more competitive airfreight and ocean freight quotes to agent customers.
From August 18th, customers can call 1 300 SPOT RATE free of charge, and will be connected direct to the AMI Spot Rate Desk. Spot rates will be available on all airfreight shipment over 250 kilos, and all ocean shipments.
The job of the AMI Spot Rate desk will be to research service and rate options across multiple carriers on behalf of its agent customers, and present them with high-speed quotes representing the best possible deals.
The launch of a Spot Rate desk in Australia is one of a number of measures being adopted since AMI acquired well-known Australian airfreight wholesaler UAC in April 2007. The new facility echoes a successful move made in 2006 by AMI’s UK operation, where spot rates now account for some 20% of all bookings. AMI Australia is also now publishing a global tariff based closely on the highly-successful UK model, which traces its origins back almost 30 years.
Heading up the Spot Rate Desk is Mike Montague, who has joined AMI from forwarder CT Freight. Says Montague: “The launch of this new facility recognises the changed nature of the airfreight business, in which the speed and competitiveness of quotations are now critical in helping agents to retain their existing business and develop new traffic.
“In addition to helping our current customers, we expect this Spot Rate facility to be a major factor in winning new accounts, and we are confident this initiative will make a significant contribution to our continuing fast growth.”
Adds Mike Pattinson, a founder of UAC and now AMI’s VP Global Sales: “The great thing about UAC joining AMI in 2007 is that our two strong, well-established companies have been able to pool their resources, skills and best ideas. The Spot Rate facility has worked tremendously well in the UK, and we see no reason why it will not have a similar impact on the Australian market.”
AMI is the world’s largest trade-only airfreight wholesaler, with 13 owned bases in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, UK, Germany and South Africa. It is part of publicly-listed John Menzies plc, which also has extensive interests in aviation ground handling and cargo handling. AMI Australia’s continuing strong performance since 2007 was a major factor in the company scooping the Business Improvement Award in this year’s prestigious IFW Freight Awards.
