New scheme to enhance air cargo security

The Singapore Aviation Academy has launched measures to enhance air cargo security on passenger aircraft through a voluntary registration programme that will ensure complete cargo screening for airlines that join, reports the Shipping Gazette.
Under the Regulated Air Cargo Agent Regime, registered companies are required to carry out security measures such as X-rays and documentation of their consignments, thus subjecting them to only random screenings at airfreight terminals.
The initiative has been implemented since April 1 and is the result of a review of security measures at Changi Airport by the police and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
As of August, 273 of the 280 air cargo companies here have been registered. It is not mandatory for companies to register under the initiative. But those that opt out will subject their entire cargo consignments to the full extent of security measures at airfreight terminals.
