Wrightbus upbeat with strong registrations

With strong year to date sales, production lines working at full capacity and a healthy forward order book, Ballymena-based Wrightbus is defying the economic gloom that is currently hanging over other automotive sectors.
Latest figures show that the independently-owned bus builder has notched up registrations of 496 vehicles in the UK as at the end of July, giving it an overall 39% share of the bus market over 15 tonnes GVW, as well as leading positions in the single deck, double deck and school bus market segment in that weight class during the same period.
With nearly 600 production staff now engaged on seven production lines at its Galgorm manufacturing facility, including one which is currently dedicated to a major US export contract for its innovative StreetCar RTV, production is likely to reach the 1,000 mark in 2008 according to Wright Group Managing Director Mark Nodder.
“We are bucking the current trend in the wider automotive sector at the moment, with production levels running at near full capacity, some 60% higher than last year. With the UK registration figures underlining strong year to date sales performance, significant orders from major operators such as First, Arriva, Lothian and Translink for 2008 and beyond, plus exciting new production developments coming on stream - including our next generation hybrid powered vehicles – we are very upbeat about prospects in what are undoubtedly difficult times in the wider economy”.
The Wright Group, which also includes the Customcare Aftermarket support operation and Wright Composites - which supplies GRP components for both in-house production requirements and a growing external customer base – will be exhibiting its latest models in its line up at Euro Bus Expo at the NEC Birmingham this November. Its new hybrid-powered Double Deck bus and the first StreetCar RTV, which is destined for the service in Las Vegas as part of a $55m contract, are likely to be two major stars of the show.
