German engineering company Körting Hannover AG is one of Germanischer Lloyd's first partners in a pilot project to apply the new, modular certification system for maritime components and assemblies. An agreement for alternative product certification and a framework agreement covering all required services were signed by Körting and GL at SMM. Following a successful process audit, the manufacturer of ejectors and vacuum technology amongst other, was declared qualified for alternative product certification.
Quality protection and rising pressure of costs on the manufacturing side have prompted calls for alternative certification methods. These alternative methods uphold the required safety standards while enabling better integration into manufacturing processes. Apart from its purpose for component certification, GL's
alternative process certification may also be used to evaluate the manufacturer's supply chain. GL is currently running a series of certification pilot projects with a group of selected manufacturers, including Körting Hannover AG.
