The total freight volume transported in 2008 by companies in the PKP national rail group amounted to 142 million tonnes, and PKP companies clocked up a total of 39 billion tonne-kilometres in 2008, Logistics Finland rported. This compares with a total volume of 153 million tonnes in 2007, and tonne-kilometres totalling 43 billion. By far the biggest freight operator in Poland, PKP Cargo, transported a total of 134.4 million tonnes of freight in 2008, compared with 144.6 million tonnes in 2007, and accumulated a total of 36.4 billion tonne-kilometres, compared with 40.6 billion in 2007. The main reason for the decline was the drop in demand for aggregates, ores and metals transports, in response to the global economic slowdown. Meanwhile, there was an increase in the volume of coal transported in 2008, and it accounted for a 40% share of the overall rail freight in Poland in 2008.
