New Porsche Panamera takes the train

Porsche AG relies on DB Schenker Rail, the rail freight carrier of Deutsche Bahn, for the supply of car bodies to its production site for the new Porsche Panamera in Leipzig. The car bodies are transported from the
Volkswagen plant in Hanover to the Porsche plant in Leipzig for final assembly.
As of August, the production in Leipzig is expected to be insofar initiated that three block trains with 24 cars each will leave for Leipzig per week. “We have been a partner to Porsche for 25 years; since 2002, we have transported car bodies for the Cayenne to the Leipzig plant by rail. We are pleased about the
fact that Porsche has once again chosen our logistics services and that DB Schenker Rail is able to follow the trends in the automotive industry”, said Dr. Norbert Bensel, CEO DB Schenker.
One unique feature of the transportation services to Leipzig is the exact timing of the two supply streams for the two models “Panamera” and “Cayenne.” In addition, the car bodies have to be delivered in a specific sequence and in the right position. The car bodies have to be properly positioned from the very
beginning because otherwise they would have to be manually unloaded. They have to be delivered in the right sequence in order not to interfere with Porsche’s precisely cycled production of the cars which are manufactured
individually in accordance with customers’ wishes.
