First GBRf wins ‘Best Small Depot’ safety award

Freight hauliers First GBRf have became the proud recipient of the ‘Best Small Depot’ safety award and a cheque for £1000 to donate to the charity of their choosing, at FirstGroup’s annual internal safety and environmental awards, held recently at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Knightsbridge, London.
Designed to recognise and reward the safety and environmental achievements of its people and companies throughout the UK, the awards reinforce First’s commitment to safety and the environment.
Award winners were selected by a judging panel made up of FirstGroup’s senior management and contract partners. First GBRf’s success in the ‘Best Depot’ category saw them beating off strong competition from other rail and bus companies within the Group and the panel commended the rail freight operator’s well-trained and motivated staff at Cambridgeshire, who go the extra mile to ensure safety standards are at the highest level.
John Smith, Managing Director, First GBRf commented: “We are delighted to be the recipient of this award, which achieves recognition for all of our staff at Peterborough. As a rail freight operator working with heavy loads it is essential that safety is our first consideration in any job we undertake and wining this award shows we are achieving our objective of making safety our number one priority at all times.”
Staff at the depot have decided to donate the prize money received to Help for heroes, First GBRf’s nominated charity for 2009, which helps those who have been wounded in conflict.
The awards dinner was attended by over 120 senior management from FirstGroup and included representatives from each of First’s British companies.  Special external guests included: Paul Thomas, Chairman of the Rail Safety Standards Board; Iain Coucher, Chief Executive of Network Rail; Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council; Dr Mike Mitchell, Director General of Rail and Networks; and Chris Bolt, Chairman of the Office of Rail Regulation.
“Safety underpins everything that we do at First,” said Naveed Qamar, FirstGroup’s Safety Director.  “Our message to our 137,000 global workforce is, ‘If you cannot do it safely, don’t do it.’  Our awards not only reward those individuals and companies that have delivered outstanding safety performance, but also give everyone encouragement to improve their own performance.  Our approach to safety is relentless, and whilst we can point to a good safety record across the Group, we must continue to improve and do better.”
