Lufthansa Cargo AG introduced its new multimodal AirShip service from Europe to Australia in the beginning of 2009. The concept is to transport shipments from Europe to Shenzhen or Hong Kong by air on the first stage and then transfer them to the corresponding seaport for onforwarding to their final destination in Australia. The new multimodal transportation service uses a single airwaybill for the entire route from origin airport to the final destination seaport.
Lufthansa Cargo AG has selected International Cargo Centre Shenzhen – ICCS as their first Airship Centre in Mainland China. ICCS’s part in this new multimodal service is to ensure the smooth, fast and efficient ground handling and in-time transfer of these goods from air to seaport.
On 9th June the latest air-sea shipment coming from Frankfurt, arrived at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. A seamless operation in ICCS’s AirShip Centre enabled the above shipment to reach its final destination Sydney within only 7 days. Compared to the traditional maritime mode of the transportation, the total time could be reduced from 6-7 weeks to around 20 days normally. While compared with the higher transportation costs of pure airfreight, the shippers benefited by having a cost-efficient, yet quick way of the goods reached the consignees in Australia.
