Hector Rail to power Veolia Transport passenger trains

  29.06.2009

Veolia Transport has chosen Hector Rail to provide the locomotive power for its overnight Lapland train service between Malmö and Narvik. The service starts on 22 June and will run throughout the summer. Veolia is behind an innovative onboard concept now being offered to the market. Hector Rail has a strictly subcontractor role in providing the locomotive power for the train service.
Veolia Transport is taking advantage of the new opportunities that are opening up on the increasingly deregulated passenger rail market. This summer, the company is launching an overnight rail service between Malmö/Göteborg and Narvik featuring an innovative onboard concept. This concept includes e.g. DVD film rentals and a classic restaurant car where the food is served on genuine china. All designed to create an attractive travel experience.
Veolia Transport has entrusted the provision of locomotive power for this extended 2,147 km route to Hector Rail. The contract is further confirmation of the excellent relationship between Veolia and Hector that started in winter 2007 with the provision of similar locomotive power for Veolia’s winter sports rail service to the Swedish ski resort of Åre.
The Lapland service will run from 22 June to 23 August.
“This is an exciting development for Hector Rail and opens up a new market for us as a supplier of locomotive power to passenger trains,” said Mats Nyblom, CEO of Hector Rail AB. “It means passengers can now experience the power that has been available to European freight clients for several successful years. However Hector Rail’s role is strictly that of subcontractor, we are purely providing the locomotive power. The service concept and the offer to the travel market are the responsibility of our clients, in this case Veolia Transport.”
“The big winners of the deregulation of the passenger rail market are travellers,” explained Gunnar Wulff, Head of the Rail Division at Veolia Transport. “Travellers will be able to see this in our very first product, the Lapland Train where we offer passengers an innovative and high quality product at an attractive price. We are also extremely satisfied with how smoothly our relationship with Hector Rail has proceeded which has enabled us to get the product up and running so quickly.”
