Bombardier to produce new BiLevel commuter railcars

Bombardier Transportation announced today that it has received a firm order from the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink) for seven BOMBARDIER BiLevel commuter rail vehicles. The order will add to the West Coast Express existing fleet of 37 BiLevel cars providing commuter rail service in the Metro Vancouver region. The estimated value of the contract is $21 million CDN ($18 million US, 13 million euros). Deliveries of the new vehicles are expected to begin in July 2010 and extend through September 2010.
“This is Canadian-developed technology, built in Canada for one of the country’s leading cities, and one of the industry’s most respected commuter rail operators” said Raymond Bachant, President, Bombardier Transportation, North America. “We appreciate the opportunity to help West Coast Express expand its commuter rail service capacity and are very pleased by this demonstration of renewed confidence in the BiLevel commuter rail car.”
“Like many operators in North America, West Coast Express continues to choose our BiLevel cars as the best solution for commuter rail service in urban centers,” said Steve Hall, General Manager for Bombardier Transportation in Vancouver. ”Today’s announcement speaks to the effectiveness of this product and the long-term relationship we have with the customer here.”
More than 950 Bombardier BiLevel cars are in operation or on order with transit authorities in 13 cities across Canada and the United States. The Canadian-developed rail technology is utilized in major North American urban centers like Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Seattle and New Mexico.
The BiLevel commuter rail car is a service-proven transit solution that delivers unparalleled reliability and cost efficiency, along with one of the shortest delivery schedules in the industry. BiLevel cars offer operators the price advantages of a common platform, while still allowing customers to build in features meeting their specific needs and requirements.
The new vehicles will be built at Bombardier production facilities in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
