The French rail company SNCF is a candidate to become the first operator of the Carex scheme for high-speed freight rail links between Europe's major airports. French MP and President of Euro Carex, Yanick Paternotte, said that SNCF could be the spearhead of a pool of operators. Eurotunnel may also join Carex. The chosen operator should be officially chosen in September 2009.
Alstom and Siemens are competing to supply eight high-speed freight trains capable of carrying airplane containers and transporting 120 to 160 tonnes of goods. The winner is to be announced in September 2009.
Rolling stock and infrastructures will need an investment of around EUR 300mn (USD 423.84mn). The operator may be called upon to invest. Carex is a candidate to receive funds from the French state's investment plan financed by borrowing, Logistics Finland informs.
