The Tognum business unit Engines received two orders for the supply of a total of 28 MTU engines from the Series 2000, Series 4000 and Series 1163 to the Korean Coast Guard in 2009. The orders also include MTU automation systems for six new vessels. The total order value is €37 million.
The engines and automation systems will be installed in new patrol boats with displacements of 300, 500, 1000 and 3000 tons. Contractual partners are the Korean companies STX Engine Co., Ltd, who manufactures the MTU engines under licence, and the MTU distributor, Meksan Engineering Co. Ltd who packages the automation systems with consoles. The new ships will be built by the Korean ship yards Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI) and Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd.
For the HHI order, MTU will supply four large 20V 1163 TB93 diesel engines producing 7,400 kW (9,923 bhp) for the CODAD propulsion system (Combined Diesel and Diesel) of a 3,000-ton offshore patrol boat, as well as two 12V 1163 TB93 units each generating 4,440 kW (5,954 bhp) and two 16V 4000 M90 diesels with an output of 2,720 kW (3,647 bhp) for a 500-ton class vessel. Four more 16V 4000 engines will provide the propulsion for two inshore patrol boats with a displacement of 300 tons.
The order with Hanjin includes the supply of six 20V 1163 TB93 main propulsion units and six 12V 2000M50B gensets with an electrical output of 550 kWe for on-board power supply of two vessels in the 1000- ton class.
The scope of supply for all vessels also includes the latest MTU marine automation system, Callosum, with an integrated solution for propulsion control and an electric power management system and for monitoring further ship areas like bilge or tanks.
The Korean Coast Guard has consistently increased and modernized its fleet over the past several years. As part of this effort, MTU supplied a total of 44 Series 1163 and Series 4000 engines last year to the Korean Coast Guard. Step by step, newer and faster vessels in the 300, 500, 1000, 1500 and 3000-ton displacement classes have been added to the fleet. The fast patrol boats support the coastal protection, secure shipping lanes, carry out sea-rescue operations and monitor the Korean coastline.
The Korean Coast Guard has employed MTU engines and automation systems since the 1980s. At present, there are about 250 MTU engines in operation with the Korean Coast Guard. The propulsion units are held in high regard because of their proven reliability, their excellent power to weight ratio, their low fuel-consumption and the global support offered by MTU’s service network.
