The Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd. (AML) commissioned Lufthansa Consulting to prepare detailed infrastructural layout concepts for the planned Air Cargo and Freeport Zones at the island’s Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam SSR International Airport. A consulting contract to that effect was signed on October 19, 2009 at AML’s headquarters in Mauritius.
Together with the AML project team, the German aviation experts will lay the foundations for the successful marketing and development of these Zones. Several investors and developers have already voiced interest in setting up their businesses in the Freeport Zones, which will allow production, assembly and logistics activities under a tax-free regime. Loading operations between the aircraft and the Mauritius Cargo Terminal will be facilitated by the new design provided by Lufthansa Consulting, adding yet another competitive advantage to the ambitious large scale project.
The Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd. started operations in 1999 and is the owner and operator of SSR International Airport with the Government of Mauritius as its main shareholder. 20 scheduled airlines serve more than 35 destinations and more than
2.5 million passengers transited through the airport in 2007.
