Wilhelmsen Ships Service joins ILAMA

  20.11.2009

The world’s leading maritime service network Wilhelmsen Ships Service has been accepted as a Member of the International Lifesaving Appliances Manufacturers Association (ILAMA).
Wilhelmsen Ships Service joins other leading companies within the marine safety industry which form ILAMA to use their membership to voice opinion and provide input in the international standards arena.
Dave Evans, Product Marketing Manager Life Saving & Survival comments, “Being accepted by ILAMA is an honour granted to companies who design and approve their own products, and who can make a valuable contribution to the improvement in safety for seafarers.”
ILAMA plays a significant part in the international safety scene. By presenting views and technical papers, ILAMA ensures that bodies such as the European Commission and the International Maritime Organisation take into account its members' concerns.
The range of safety products offered by Wilhelmsen Ships Service includes the Unitor branded liferafts, lifejackets and immersion suits which are supplied to thousands of ships around the world as part of Wilhelmsen Ships Service’s global ships services offer.
ILAMA monitors standards of safety equipment to ensure that the intentions of the legislative bodies are maintained in practice and that all certified products, regardless of origin, are uniformly compliant with appropriate standards. It is only by continuous vigilance that this vital safety issue can be addressed.
ILAMA holds Observer and Consultative status at IMO, where it is able to comment on forthcoming legislation and present technical papers on topics of concern. It is also involved in the process of formulating European regulations; by virtue of its relationship with the European Commission, Marine Directorate it can influence European policy and regulations. Members sit on various ISO and EC committees helping to draft and maintain international standards of life-saving appliances.
Besides the Unitor safety products Wilhelmsen Ships Service supplies a range of other marine products, technical services, ships agency services and maritime logistics.
