Ventspils starts servicing largest TransRussiaExpress ro-pax ferries

  28.07.2010

A passenger and freight ferry that operates on the regular shipping line TransRussiaExpress (TRE) will arrive from the Port of Luebeck at the Port of Ventspils (Latvia) on July 30, 2010. TransRussiaExpress ferries that belong to the Finnlines/Grimaldi Group have been running between Luebeck and St. Petersburg for 13 years already. From July 30, the ferries will also call at Ventspils four times a week. At the same time, the number of calls at Sassnitz-Mukran will also be increased.
The passenger and freight ferries TRANSRUSSIA and TRANSEUROPE that operate on the TransRussiaExpress line are at the moment the largest-ever ferries of the given type to operate regularly in the Baltic countries, said TRE agent in Latvia, Member of the Board at the Joint Stock Company Silver Star Agencies, Claus Olsen.
Each ferry offers 3,200 lane metres and can load up to 250 trucks, the ferries also have room for 124 passengers. The ferries can carry general cargo, timber, containers and passenger cars, and they also have comfortable passenger facilities and lounges.
A modern vessel stability system and the highest ice class of both ferries, plus the maximum speed of 21 knots enable regular on-schedule ferry traffic not only in favourable weather conditions but also in inclement weather and in severe winter temperatures.
In Ventspils, both ferries will moor at a modern multi-functional freight terminal - Noord Natie Ventspils termināls (NNVT). Besides ro/ro operations, NNVT also handles container freight as well as freight delivered by rail. The terminal is able to hold up to 110 railcars at the terminal at a time.
The combination of the capacities of the NNVT terminal and the services offered by the passenger and freight ferry line TransRussiaExpress present a new opportunity for the attraction of transit freight from the Baltic countries and Russia to Germany.
