GPA handles 10pc more boxes

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) handled more than 2.63 million TEU in fiscal 2010, an increase of 9.7 per cent compared to the previous fiscal year, according to the Shipping Gazette.
It also experienced a 7.3 per cent increase in total tonnage for all terminal facilities, handling 24,288,789 tons of cargo in fiscal 2010.
In June, the GPA registered a 34.2 per cent increase with 240,734 TEU handled compared with the same month last year.
Total tonnage handled by all terminals in June 2010 grew by 17.1 per cent to 2,051,293.
"The second half of the (fiscal) year was particularly strong with signs of economic recovery, retail sector inventory replenishment and continued strong demand for US produced products boosting export volumes," said (GPA) executive director Curtis Foltz in a statement.
"The 9.7 per cent increase in TEU for the year allowed the GPA to fully recover from decreases experienced in FY2009 and return to the record levels reached in FY2008."
