The German Government has decided to reduce the subsidies for shipping firms' ancillary labour costs to EUR 28.60mn (USD 36.13mn) annually, down from EUR 57.2mn. The Government said this is because of the success that the subsidies have already had. It pointed out that the number workers in the sector has doubled since 2003. Shipping firms are complaining about the cuts though. They say that it is becoming more difficult to operate ships under German flag.
