Changi air freight volume rises 5.6pc

Singapore's Changi Airport handled 166,100 tonnes of cargo in March 2011, an increase of 5.6 per cent compared to the same month last year, making it the airport's busiest month in three years, the Shipping Gazette informs.
Passenger traffic rose by 7.5 per cent last month to 3.71 million despite declines of 9.6 per cent to Tokyo and five per cent to Japan as a whole.
Aircraft movements for the month increased 13 per cent year on year to 24,400 as low cost carriers "continued to enjoy strong growth," a statement from airport authorities said. Low cost carriers are said to account for almost a quarter of all traffic.
During the January to March quarter, air freight volumes rose 2.9 per cent to 441,400 tonnes compared to the first quarter of 2010.
First quarter passenger numbers grew by 9.5 per cent to 10.9 million on the back of double-digit growth in traffic to and from eastern Europe, south east Asia and north east Asia. Changi handled 70,400 aircraft movements during the period, up 12.3 per cent year on year.
