Passengers rank Munich Airport among the best in the world

About 100 guests from airlines, government offices and businesses at Munich Airport got together to celebrate the Bavarian hub's selection as the "European champion" in the World Airport Awards 2011. Speaking to the gathering, Bavarian finance minister Georg Fahrenschon, the chairman of the supervisory board of FMG, the airport's operating company, praised this extraordinary achievement: "Despite the enormous growth in traffic and the major expansion work, the passengers have reaffirmed that our airport has retained its key strengths: It is perceived as a reliable, friendly and aesthetically pleasing airport, but above all as a pleasant airport." Airport CEO Dr. Michael Kerkloh expressed his delight with the award and, looking ahead to the future, said that the airport community will continue to make every effort to "maintain the high quality standards in times of rapidly increasing traffic figures."
This marks the sixth time Munich has topped the European rankings, which it won last year and four years in a row from 2005 to 2008. Munich has also placed near the top in the global level on a regular basis in recent years. In 2011 the Bavarian capital achieved fourth place worldwide behind Hong Kong, Singapore and Seoul. The renowned London-based aviation research institute Skytrax asked 11.4 million passengers from more than 100 countries around the world about their favorite airports.
For the World Airport Awards, the surveyed passengers rated more than 240 international airports as well as numerous airlines. They assessed airports in terms of numerous criteria, including quality of handling and services, staff courtesy and efficiency, shopping and leisure amenities and transit facilities. Munich earned "good" or "excellent" ratings in 32 of the 33 categories. In addition, the Kempinski Hotel Airport München was voted the second-best airport hotel in Europe behind the Sofitel at London Heathrow. Another award was handed out in the special category "Leisure Amenities", in which Munich ranked number two in the world.
