FAA grants certification for Lufthansa Systems BoardConnect

  15.06.2011

The U.S. aviation authority FAA has issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the installation of Lufthansa System’s innovative in-flight entertainment solution (IFE) onboard an Airbus aircraft of an undisclosed customer. The installation consists of a server with a 3G Modem and three access points in the cabin. It allows the airline to offer their guests a wide range of video and audio on demand, games and other content. It is distributed wireless and can be accessed by the passengers using their own laptops, tablet PCs, smart phones or other WiFi-enabled devices. As long as the aircraft is on the ground it is connected to the internet through a 3G modem.
BoardConnect also makes it possible for airlines to offer new forms of customer communication, information and services. Once an aircraft is additionally equipped with broadband Internet access, passengers can also send and receive e-mail while in the air and access all of the same online content available to them on the ground. New services can generate additional revenues for airlines, and airlines can also customize their contact with each passenger.
Board Connect was first presented in early March together with launch customer Condor. It is designed for high reliability and low cost of ownership. Therefore it for example uses standard software solutions. While conventional IFE systems require an extensive downtime of the aircraft for installation, BoardConnect can be fitted during routine overnight layovers or maintenance checks. Thanks to the minimal installation effort, the solution is ideal not just for long-haul jets but also for smaller aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737, which generally offer very limited IFE options.
