Jakarta looking for an appropriate way to enhance the security management system

  12.09.2011

Facing rising industry protest on the implementation of a new air cargo security system, the Indonesian government has agreed to set up a committee to look for an appropriate way to enhance the security management system that will be acceptable to all parties.
The government initially planned to upgrade the cargo security at major airports, including scanning the cargo with x-ray machines by regulated agents instead of warehouse operators, reported London's International Freighting Weekly.
Businesses have been pleading with Indonesian authorities to reform air cargo screening because they believed the new system would reduce the competitiveness of their products overseas.
After hearing the protests, Indonesian transport minister Freddy Numberi held a meeting with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other business associations, and agreed afterwards that a widely accepted solution should be made.
