Qatar Airways to launch more flights to Bulgaria
Qatar Airways plans to increase the frequency of flights from Bulgaria's capital city Sofia to Qatar's capital Doha and to launch new routes to the country within a year, the air carrier's chief executive Akbar al-Baker said on September 15 2011.
The planned new flights will service remote destinations, al-Baker said without elaborating.
Currently, the airline services the Sofia-Doha destination four times a week with a stop-over in Bucharest as the carrier does not have enough aircraft to serve the route on a daily basis without a stop-over in the Romanian capital, al-Baker said.
The Doha-Sofia flight is expected to gain popularity as about 200 Bulgarians live in Qatar at present. In addition, Qatari citizens will have the opportunity to fly to Sofia on business or on holiday at its Black Sea or winter resorts, he said.
"We do not fly four days a week to Bulgaria just to explore the market," he said.
Meanwhile, the company has no plans to launch flights between Bulgaria and other European countries, according to the Sofia Echo.
