Atlas Air has terminated three of a 12-plane order for the 747-8F

Atlas Air has terminated three of a 12-plane order for the 747-8F, the fourth-generation Boeing 747 version of lengthened fuselage and redesigned wings, following on from a Cargolux decision to rescind on two planes due for delivery.
"As prudent asset managers, terminating the first three aircraft was the right decision for our fleet, our customers and our stockholders," said Atlas Air CEO William Flynn.
Purchase, New York-based Atlas Air said it was exercising its right to terminate because of delays in design, production and testing problems on the early-model freighters.
Of the nine remaining planes for delivery from end 2011 to 2013 since its order in 2006, the first three will be delivered end of October and be wet leased to British Airways, and a further two for the Swiss carrier Panalpina by the end of 2011.
The 747-8 freighter variant has been troubled by strikes, production problems and growing competition from the Airbus A380, a full-length double-deck aircraft already in service, the Shipping Gazette informs.
