SIA Cargo joins other carriers


Singapore's SIA Cargo, the cargo arm of Singapore Airlines, has inaugurated a twice-weekly service from Chongqing to Singapore using Boeing 747-400 freighter, according to the Shipping Gazette. 
The maiden flight carried 60 tonnes of IT products and took off from Chongqing's Jiangbei International Airport, Xinhua reports.
Chongqing air cargo traffic has been booming over the summer. China Southern reported its thrice weekly service flew 570 tonnes of laptops on its Shanghai-Amsterdam route over two months. China Airlines also announced the launch of Taiwan cargo and passenger flights to Chongqing
Chongqing Airport Group predicts that air cargo will top 220,000 tonnes this year of which 80 per cent of 80,000 tonnes of international air freight will be composed of IT products, including 55,000 tonnes of locally-made laptops.
Singapore SIA Cargo service will bring an extra weekly capacity of 180 tonnes to Chongqing airport. The number of international cargo flights from Chongqing will increase to 30 weekly while total capacity will rise to 2,800 tonnes per week.
SIA Cargo is planning to increase frequency of the new service to one flight per day early next year.
Via SIA Cargo's network, the cargo using this service can transit to India, Middle East, Australia, Europe, Africa and other Asia Pacific regions.
SIA Cargo is the 10th cargo carrier that launches service from Chongqing. It is operating a fleet of 13 Boeing 747-400 freighter with a network covering 98 destinations in 40 countries in the world.
