Lufthansa Cargo volumes decline 11.4pc

Lufthansa Cargo's volume dropped 11.4 per cent to 122,000 tons in January shrinking revenue 12.9 per cent,
Poor performance was attributed to economic slump, seasonal decline from the Chinese New Year and the ongoing night-flight ban at its Frankfurt hub.
The German carrier forecasts an annual revenue loss of US$52 million in re-routing should the blanket night-flight ban become a permanent fixture in 2012 particularly for its express cargo shipments to the US due early morning and now defunct.
To cope with the ban it has detoured its important North American flights on Asia-bound MD-11 freighters via Cologne, resulting in extra freight pick-ups for Far East flights and further costs needed to truck freight to take off its US services, which has eaten into gains, particularly its Chicago route. It will now end diversion to stem revenue losses until the summer schedule begins March 25.
Asia-Pacific freight volumes were the most damaged in a decline of 20.8 per cent to 36,000 tons and revenue down by 18.6 per cent managed by a deep cut in capacity of 21.7 per cent bumping up load factor.
Lufthansa Cargo's Americas volume declined 7.4 per cent to 44,000 tons with a revenue drop of 6.7 per cent, the Shipping Gazette informs.
