Newark Liberty airport spends US$80 to upgrade runway

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) plans to clear a runway for faster turnarounds for departing flights at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The US$80.6 million project to improve safety and efficiency will cut time by eight seconds per flight during peak hours, say planners.
Runway 4R-22L will be fitted with new asphalt and have its electrical system overhauled over stages to minimise disruptions to a runway which handles 190,000 takeoffs and landings a year over its 10,000 feet at a cost of $42 million.
It will spend $27 million on an arresting system made of collapsible concrete at the airport's east end of Runway 11/29 to prevent aircraft overshooting and keep it compliant with US federal aviation standards.
Rehabilitation work of four taxiways at Newark Liberty and four at LaGuardia Airport has been approved by the port authority at a cost of $11.6 million. Disruption will be lessened through use of other taxiways during work, said the authority, reported American Shipper.
