Demag Cranes secures two orders from German ports

Demag Cranes has received two orders from German ports within a few weeks and thus further strengthened its position on the home market. The company will supply a Gottwald G HMK 6407 Mobile Harbour Crane including a spreader to Heilbronner Versorgungs GmbH.
The crane will be used in the Neckar port there. For summer 2012, it is planned to supply a G HMK 8610 and a G HMK 3405 to Rendsburg Port Authority GmbH for their port located in Osterrönfeld, Rendsburg Port.
The crane destined for Heilbronn will assure both loading and unloading of the river barges and handling of containers at the terminal. Via the public invitation to tender, Demag Cranes was awarded the contract, according to Port Director Wolfgang Feger: “The G HMK 6407 with a maximum lifting capacity of 100 tonnes and a working radius of 51 metres offers the flexibility we require for our new inland terminal.” The crane also represents a novelty: it is the first Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane on the River Neckar, which is also due to the fact that Mobile Harbour Cranes do not currently enjoy the
popularity in German river ports that they have for many years enjoyed in sea ports.

The Kiel Canal: high performance in tandem operation
The two cranes for Rendsburg Port Authority GmbH will in future be used on the Kiel Canal, mainly for handling project cargo – particularly large components for wind energy installations. Tandem operation is also planned, whereby the smaller G HMK 3405 Mobile Harbour Crane (maximum 100 tonnes lifting capacity) in this case works as a support crane for the larger G HMK 8610 Mobile Harbour Crane (maximum 150 tonnes lifting capacity). As Herwig Schröder, Managing Director of Rendsburg Port Authority GmbH explains, in terms of efficiency the two cranes will achieve a top position in the northernmost German Federal State: “In tandem operation, with the two Gottwald Cranes we have lifting capacities of up to 250 tonnes, more than any other Mobile Harbour Crane in Schleswig-Holstein.” In addition to two load bars, a spreader is included in the scope of delivery, since the cranes are also intended to be used for handling containers. The award of this contract was also preceded by a public bid for tender.

Gottwald – versatile products, innovative technology
In the opinion of Dr. Klaus Woeste, Regional Product Manager for Gottwald Cranes, the two most recent successes are the result of both the efficiency and the versatility of Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes: “We have the appropriate crane for all port sizes, and we are particularly pleased that, with the Port of Heilbronn, we have gained the first inland terminal for many years as a customer.” Rendsburg Port placing the order also strengthened the role of Gottwald as an innovative technology partner of future industries such as the wind industry”, Klaus Woeste continues.

Port of Heilbronn – seventh largest inland port in Germany
With an area of some 80 hectares, approximately a third of which is water, the Port of Heilbronn is the seventh largest inland terminal in Germany. Over 50% of handling on the Neckar operates via the Port of Heilbronn, which makes the port an economic factor of national significance. In figures, this means that 4.4 million tonnes are handled here every year on a quay length of 7.6 kilometres. Inland trade constitutes 60% of this trade, the rest consists of international cargo and merchandise. In addition to raw and building materials, mainly grain, iron, steel and wood are handled.

Rendsburg Port – forward-looking overall concept for modern companies
Rendsburg Port lies directly on the Kiel Canal. It is based on a forward-looking overall concept: in the directly adjacent industrial estate, it is planned to locate companies that are dependent on direct access to the water. In addition, a heavy-duty road leads to a further industrial estate designed for suppliers of wind energy installations, manufacturers of heavy machinery and logistics companies geared towards container handling. In future, the two Gottwald Cranes will contribute to the port providing ideal conditions for manufacturers and shippers of very heavy products.
