Quality and Versatility impress Thamesdown as they take Six Wrightbus Streetlite® Midi Buses

  23.05.2012

Thamesdown of Swindon is the latest bus operator to choose the highly versatile StreetLite® midi bus from Wrightbus, taking six, 10.8 metre variants, the first to enter service.
“Having just signed off the first vehicle at Wrightbus, we are delighted with the quality and high standard of finish of the StreetLite®,” said Paul Jenkins, Managing Director of Thamesdown.
“It is all we expected it to be and we know our customers will appreciate the benefits these passenger-focused vehicles will deliver around the urban area of Swindon.”
The Thamesdown midi bus can seat 41 passengers and has room for 29 standees, making a maximum capacity for 70 passengers. Using the Wrightbus Aluminique™ structure allows the creation of the stylish curved body features with deep side windows and a full rear window giving the vehicle a light and airy interior. An integral emergency door is fitted to the side frames and the vehicles are fully certified to ECWVTA & ECE107 regulations.
An advanced heating and ventilation system, which is fitted as standard, offers passenger comfort, while a smooth and comfortable ride quality results from the independent front suspension and a four spring rear air suspension system.
A number of practical features are integrated into the StreetLite’s design, focused on minimising whole life operating costs. The body includes an enhanced steel front crash rail for improved safety, incorporating crumple zone and primary structural protection. For ease of repair, the front dome of the vehicle is manufactured in a 4-piece sectionalised GRP moulding. Headlights are positioned outside the impact zone and are readily accessed via removal of the front bezel. A one-piece bumper below the grill can easily be replaced as can all the quick release panels.
To facilitate ease of servicing and maintenance the engine, gearbox, cooling pack, air filter and exhaust system are mounted on a demountable skid. A highly responsive, fuel efficient, 4 cylinder Cummins 160PS, iSBe5 (SCR) engine is emissions compliant to Euro 5 and the vehicles are fitted with the latest Voith D823.3E automatic gearbox, with integrated hydrodynamic retarder. In service StreetLite® maximises operational efficiency and fuel economy thanks to its exceptionally light weight.
Each vehicle is fitted with a nine camera CCTV systems for safety and passenger security, along with reversing camera and cab monitor. Daytime running lights are fitted as standard, as part of a combined indicator/position/DRL, LED lamp system. Hanover LED destination displays and bus stop announcing system are also fitted. The ergonomic driver’s area provides excellent all round visibility, has air conditioning and is ISO 16121 compliant.
Thamesdown already operate 28 ‘Solar’ Wrightbus bodied, 12 metre, single decks on Scania chassis in its fleet of 85 vehicles. The new StreetLites® will be finished in the latest version of Thamesdown’s livery of green, blue and white and all 6 vehicles will be delivered during May.
“When it was first launched Thamesdown were attracted by the innovative design of StreetLite®,” said Steve Jackson, Wrightbus National Accounts Manager. “The subsequent development of the 10.8 metre variant ideally fits their operational requirements around the Swindon area.”
