March 2012 brings small dip in passenger traffic for Denver International Airport

March 2012 brought a small dip in passenger traffic at Denver International Airport (DIA) with a reported total of 4,458,044 passengers traveling through the facility.  The figure represents a 1.0 percent decline from the 4,503,719 travelers who used the airport during the same month last year, or a decrease of 45,675 passengers.  DIA’s year-to-date traffic total is up slightly with 12,122,201 passengers traveling through Denver so far this year, a 0.2 percent increase over the same timeframe in 2011.
“Passenger traffic for the first three months of 2012 remains essentially flat,” said Aviation Manager Kim Day.  “As a result of airline schedule adjustments that went into effect earlier in the year, we’ve seen small increases one month, followed by small decreases the next.  We’re hopeful that with the addition of new flights this spring and summer, coupled with the competitive airfares still available in the Denver market, we’ll start to turn these numbers around and see an overall slight increase for the year.”
March brought a 4.2 percent decrease in flight operations, which fell from 55,261 in 2011, to 52,953 in 2012.  Cargo saw a decrease of 12.3 percent with 46,136,654 pounds of total cargo handled in March 2012, compared to 52,615,315 pounds during the same month last year.
