Partial new start for ZALCO a reality

On Monday 11 June, the agreements between Zeeland Seaports, the Dutch company UTB and the American concern Century were concluded for the takeover of the foundry and the anode plant on the former ZALCO site.
The takeover of the foundry and the anode plant means that half of the original site will again become active. The other half, where the aluminium smelter is located, will be dismantled and then provide prospects for Zeeland Seaports to develop new water-related activities. Zeeland Seaports expects to be able to put this site to good use.
CEO Hans van der Hart of Zeeland Seaports seems pleased with the outcome of months of negotiations. It was a complex bankruptcy with unexpected developments. “In the past few weeks, Zeeland Seaports, bankruptcy trustees and the people from UTB and Century cooperated intensively to achieve this result. I’m therefore pleased that we were able to reach this solution. It means that at least some of the jobs that were lost in our port have been secured again. In the period ahead, we are going to work hard to find a good use for that part of the ZALCO site that becomes allocable again.”
