APL increases westbound Asia-Europe rate

  22.06.2012

Singapore's APL, the world's seventh largest carrier, has announced it will impose a general rate increase (GRI) on the westbound Asia-Europe route by US$500 per TEU starting July 1.
"The rate restoration is applicable to all shipments from Asia, including Japan, Australia, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East, to North Europe, the Mediterranean and Black Sea," said a statement from APL India.
The Indian subcontinent region includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
APL and most of other top carriers have decided to abandon the $350 per TEU peak season surcharge that was supposed to take effect in June.
Instead, carriers announced various rate increases on the Asia-Europe trade to be effective July 1. Hapag -Lloyd and MSC will increase rates by $500 per TEU on July 1; Hanjin Shipping and OOCL will raise $400 per TEU; and UASC $505 per TEU.
