Global UN carbon emissions tax proposal to be delayed until 2013
Despite the fanfare ahead of the "perfect flight" in biofuel-powered flights to cut CO2 emissions 40 per cent, draft proposals of aviation emissions will be tabled for March 2013 on a global emissions tax levied through a trading scheme.
According to secretary-general of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Raymond Benjamin, the United Nations body will discuss policy options ahead of next spring to avoid any stand-off such as the reaction to EU emissions trading scheme in and out of the EU by China, US and India.
The impact of the EU move has threatened trade balance with China grounding European aircraft in retaliation of its non-compliance and in US$14 billion worth of Airbus orders from Beijing on hold, according to a report from London-based BusinessGreen newssite.
"I believe that the turning point will be in March next year, when we will put one option on the table, if all goes well," said Mr Benjamin. Such a proposal will have to be ratified in a vote by 191 ICAO members in the autumn of 2013, said Reuters.
