For the first time in 20 years more people killed in road traffic accidents in 2011
The trend towards declining numbers of people killed in traffic accidents that had continued for 20 years came to a halt in 2011. Based on the final results that are available now, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that a total of 4,009 people were killed in traffic accidents. That was an increase by 361 people or 9.9% compared with a year earlier. Thus an average of 11 people per day were killed in road traffic accidents in 2011. The number of people injured, too, rose in 2011. The proportion of road users who were seriously injured increased by 10.2%, while that of people slightly injured was up 4.8%.
