Jettainer and airberlin sign ULD management deal

Jettainer, an international service partner for outsourced ULD management, was appointed to manage and maintain the entire ULD fleet of airberlin. In this matter, Jettainer will also introduce a number of ecologically friendly lightweight containers at airberlin in order to help decreasing the emission.
750 ULDs will gradually be replaced by modern lightweight containers. They will come into operation on long-haul flights of airberlin’s A330-300 and A330-200 aircraft. By using this new technology, airberlin will be able to reduce the gross weight of such an aircraft by up to 200 kilograms per flight.
"Wherever weight can be reasonably reduced, we use less fuel and lessen the burden on the environment,” said Helmut Himmelreich, Chief Operating Officer for airberlin. "The lightweight containers are a new component in our “eco-efficient flying” measures, which we will expand this year to achieve our goal of a specific fuel consumption of 3.4 litres per 100 passenger kilometres."
The weight reduction enables airberlin to lower the fuel consumption of each aircraft by more than 30.000 liters per year. This goes along with a reduction of the annual carbon-dioxide emission by up to 1.100 tons per aircraft.
“Being responsible for the global management and maintenance of airberlin´s ULD fleet makes us very proud – last but not least due to the fact that airberlin’s partner Etihad Airways has appointed Jettainer to supply, manage and maintain its ULD fleet last year already. Regarding the adoption of our modern lightweight containers, airberlin will not only be able to save costs but also to reduce the emission significantly. Furthermore, both airlines will benefit from logistical synergies at the international hubs in Berlin, Duesseldorf, Abu Dhabi and New York”, said Alexander Pluemacher, Managing Director of Jettainer.
airberlin is the 14th costumer of Jettainer. The world’s leading service partner for ULD management already takes care of 13 other international customers. With airberlin, the company continues expanding its leading market position.
