Cathay Pacific gains sixth 747-8F

  17.08.2012

Cathay Pacific has received its sixth Boeing 747-8 freighter, 10 are on order with deliveries into 2013, to be deployed on Penang, Malaysia routes via Hong Kong to meet demand for ultra-long-haul freighter services, in particular to North America.
Cargo has been flat for the Hong Kong-based carrier for 16 months with its first half cargo revenue down by 7.6 per cent creating load factor decline of 4.1 points to 64.3 per cent.
The lacklustre performance is down to high fuel prices, weak demand and continuing pressure on passenger yields, said Cathay Pacific country manager for Malaysia & Brunei, Mandy Wu of a situation it will watch closely against crude oil prices.
"To better compete in Malaysia, we are using the B747-8 freighter, a bigger capacity and fuel-efficient aircraft, from Penang," Ms Wu said of a freighter with a 30 per cent smaller noise footprint, reduced fuel consumption and emission due to its use of composites and lighter alloys, cited a report from Malaysia's The Star Online.
