Lufthansa cabin crew vow to stage no strike for 6 weeks, agree to meditation

The union representing Lufthansa's cabin crew promised it would not strike for six weeks during the mediation process, which management at first had refused because the issues were too complex for mediators to understand.
"The concessions by Lufthansa have made finding a solution a lot easier. It is unrealistic to think mediation lasts less than six weeks," union representative Nicoley Baublies told Reuters.
Lufthansa and union representatives have agreed to begin a formal mediation procedure set for Wednesday, after the airline offered permanent contracts to some temporary cabin crew.
If talks fail, strikes are possible, Mr Baublies said, but this is not on the radar screen - at the moment.
Both sides now need to agree on the appointment of an independent mediator, a step which the UFO union head hopes to be completed by mid next week.
Previous talks broke down and strikes forced Lufthansa to cancel more than 1,000 flights after 13 months of negotiations over pay and working conditions.
Lufthansa has resisted the union's demand for a global five per cent pay increase and guarantees against outsourcing as it tries to cut costs and improve profits to EUR1.5 billion (US$1.9 billion) by 2014, according to the Shipping Gazette.
