Rotterdam port to add on 3 lay-by berths

The Port of Rotterdam Authority plans to build three new public lay-by berths for coastal container shipping on the Maasvlakte to reduce waiting times between calls to several box terminals at the port.
Consequently, the authorities have started the tender process to develop the new lay-by berths that are targeted for completion next year. The works will involve soil protection and the laying of 25-metres of long steel piles that are up to two metres wide.
Since the beginning of the year the ro/ro dolphins of the Rhenus terminal have been used intensively for the handling of containers, reports Dredging Today.
It said the two lay-by berths will be developed at the dolphins in the Rhenus terminal in de Europahaven. The third new lay-by berth will be at the dolphins, at a short distance from the GDF-SUEZ quay in the Beer Canal.
The port has a throughput capacity of 12 million TEU, making it is the largest container freight gateway in Europe. During the first six months of 2012, coastal shipping handled two million TEU.
