Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) further strengthened its senior management team with the announcement that it has appointed John Chai Sung-veng as Executive Director, Projects, with effect from 24 October 2012. Mr Chai will report to AAHK's Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Hui Hon-chung.
In his new role, Mr Chai will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing AAHK's numerous expansion projects to meet Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) medium- and long-term growth demands. These will cover projects such as the provision of additional aircraft parking stands and the development of the Midfield, and the planned expansion into a three-runway system. He will also lead the Projects Department to ensure that works are carried out on time, within budget, and meeting the highest standards of safety and sustainability.
Mr Chai has over 30 years of professional experience implementing and managing large, complex infrastructure projects. An engineering graduate of the University of Hong Kong, he started his career as a consultant in 1973 before joining the Government five years later. Over his 33 years of civil service he worked in various government departments before being promoted to Director of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) in 2005, a position he held until retirement in 2011.
During his career Mr Chai made significant contributions to the formulation of strategies for and implementation of major projects including the Lantau Link, Tsing Ma Bridge, Tuen Mun Road, Tuen Mun New Town Development, Route 10 and Yuen Long Highway. As Director of the CEDD, Mr Chai oversaw projects such as the Central and Wanchai Reclamation, Kai Tak Development and West Kowloon Cultural District. He also played a pivotal role in the implementation of the Greening Master Plans for individual districts.
